The story you covered about the killing in NYC with the Masonic Sword appeared to be a good and balanced piece of coverage. I've been an active Freemason for about 10 years and all too often we get painted with a VERY broad brush anytime something "untoward" occurs. The murder was a tragedy but unfortunately people CAN snap a cog at any time. I read one article where he had just joined a Lodge earlier the same night. An initiation can be a very emotional experience and unfortunately if he were also going through some serious mental issues that intensity and stress may not have helped, .. but a story I read in the NY Post makes it sound as if he merely visited that Lodge. Your mention of "clandestine" Lodges in NYC is interesting. In most metropolitan areas you'll have lodges for the "mainstream" lodge (Grand Lodge of the state of NY, in my situation) and often a Prince Hall (Black mainstream) Grand Lodge which both recognize each other as legitimate. In NYC we have about 25 other "jurisdictions" which do not typically recognize anyone and sometimes their teachings and practices can vary QUITE a bit from the mainstream.
